The dangers you choose to accept training for cycling don't really set in until your loved ones, new and eager to the experience of the road, begin to click off the kilometers. Is there ANY place on the road that you feel 100% comfortable those you're to be sharing the road with, in cars, will no question keep that persons safety at utmost priority? Even in the widest of bike lanes, the chance is always there with inept, irresponsible, and impulsive drivers that something could happen.
I've yet to get into a car with the idea that there will be no stop signs, no stop lights, no other cars around, no objects that may be on the road or appear there, or anything else that may slow or hinder the commute. Nor have I ever thought that way on a bike. In fact, the opposite, where and what route may I take that poses the least amount of opportunity for interaction.
It's quite a stressful thought as you give suggestions where to enjoy time on a bike. Because every place i've been, there hasn't been at least some sort of close call, or threat, or possibility something could happen. Of course, the more you ride, the more time you're out there, so statistically that goes up. But the fact remains, you put your life in the hands of those behind the wheels of these vehicles each and every time you set out on a ride. It is quite a scary thought.
