what do you do when what you've been working on and waiting for is just up and gone? What do you do when something is taken from you unexpectedly ? Today my bicycle was stolen as I went into the gas station to get some Ice and water to cool down. I am here in Scottsdale, AZ in the summer heat, and I am training up to prepare for the Tour of Britain at the beginning of the month. The days start early, nearly 4 am here, and doing high intensity intervals, the core temperature gets high. So this deems it necessary to take action to cool it back down, in order to do more, as well as later into the ride. As I've done hundreds of times (at this gas station in particular), as well as thousands of other area cyclists, we thankfully get the chance to cool down with some Ice and water at the local gas stations. Not much more than a minute later, as I head back out the store to begin my next portion of training, someone has taken off with my bike.
Immediately in a state of shock, bewilderment and disbelief, I see someone walking towards the store. He notices me flustered, and i said my bike was stolen. He points down the road, that someone took it. I beg and plead for him to drive me to catch them. (mind you it's just after 5 am and it's dark, on my bike is a bright light and a flashing rear taillight) - there are only so many roads, they can't be far. He hesitates, and hesitates, then drives me - in the direction and slower than i would in this case. No one to be found.
I call the cops, file a report, and catch an Uber back home. Thankfully, my race bike is here as I am to be taking it to Tour of Britain (with what was my training bike as a spare there ) - I head back out, flustered and frustrated and try to finish off my training.
What I will say, as you see in this video, is that I am grateful to have taken the time in my life to find balance mentally and spiritually - so that in these instances, when I am away from it - I may return to it. There is no reason to stay stressed, too many count on you, and you are 100 percent in control of how you react to it. Iv'e done the steps necessary to have things on the lookout for it to show back up, there is no more I can do that way.
I am very grateful for the community here and how much support to keep an eye out for it. What I know is that it is the only one around (other than the race bike I have) as well as the wheels will be the only ones like them around. So it shouldn't be hard to spot. Please keep an eye out, please learn from this and be mindful when and where you stop. Have a buddy system, and look where the cameras are for the stores (these present at this station, did not show anything other than inside the store, and the gas pumps. not the wall immediately next to the entrance where we all place our bikes)
